Journeying together through Lent

Today marks the beginning of the Christian season of Lent.  Lent is a season of preparation of our hearts. It is most often understood as a time of penance (acknowledging our brokenness together and working for change), with a focus on simplicity and intentional prayer, in hopes of preparing our hearts for the Passion and Resurrection of Jesus.  It is a time when we reflect on the ways that we have not loved ourselves, our neighbors, and God as fully as we should, and it is a time to take steps to grow closer to God.

This Lent in L’Arche Chicago, we are going to walk together in this journey closer to God, with the words and reflections of Henri Nouwen guiding us.  Henri Nouwen was a priest and writer who lived in and loved L’Arche. He wrote many books, essays, and letters reflecting on forgiveness, compassion, suffering, grief, joy, thanksgiving, belovedness, and many other elements that show up in each of our daily lives, especially in L’Arche.

Each week during Lent, we will share Henri’s reflections, as well as those from our community on the themes he presents. The words, photos, art, and music we share seek to bring us together on this journey through Lent, and to prepare our hearts for the joy of Easter.
