In the 1990s, I became familiar with L'Arche from Henri Nouwen's book Adam. Shortly thereafter, Jean Vanier visited Chicago and spoke at Holy Name Cathedral. I was impressed and touched by this man who is so devoted to providing loving homes for people with intellectual and developmental disabilities.
A keen memory from my childhood is of my cousin Ralph who lived most of his teen and adult life in an unpleasant Illinois State-run institution. Now, as a financial donor to l'Arche, my work life takes on a deeper meaning. I have a photo of one of Christianne's paintings near my computer and it reminds me of the value of work, whatever we do. Her bright artistic expression fills me with joy and hopefully the small contribution I can make from my work likewise generates a bit of happiness in Angel House.
