Our day begins as we prepare to head to our jobs. We try to have breakfast together but with differing work schedules that does not always happen. Following our morning routines we head to our places of employment. All of our Core Members have daily jobs. Four of our Core Members are artists at the famed Arts of Life Studio in Chicago. One Core Member is employed at the Tennis Fitness Center of Oak Park and one Core Member is employed at Concordia University in River Forest.
Our afternoons began as we all begin returning home from work. Afternoons are spent walking, riding bikes, store trips, possible appointments and sometimes just relaxing together. We take turns preparing dinner, and it is a priority for us to share dinner together each night. Following dinner we share evening prayer, which can consist of readings by Jean Vanier, our founder, Henry Nouwen, or exploring books of the Bible. We end this time by praying together for ourselves, our community and our world. Our day ends with clean-up and relaxing together as a community.
Our weekends are spent in a variety of ways, from outings into the community, visitors to our home, movies, bike rides, walks, and sometimes even parties. Every Sunday we worship at various churches in our community.
There really is not typical day here at L’Arche, but being together as a community is our priority.
